A slice of Island life

blog

A diary of sorts about adjusting to daily life living in Roatan, Hondurus as an Expat.

One day my husband and I decided to sell everything, give up our jobs, and move to a tropical island. It was 2020 and we were stuck at home in Richmond, Virginia during the covid quaranteen. There was little to do besides contemplate life choices a realize how unpredictable and fragile life is. At that time I was in a very stressful job working as a special education teacher with autistic students. An overbearing boss and my need for perfection set me on a path to working and obsessing about work every second of the day. I was also enrolled in college at the same time earning my certification. I was in a constant state of high stress and exhaustion. And then the world stopped. My Husband also had a highly stressful job and was hoping to retire early. So when we were watching the TV show House Hunters International and saw Roatan, a place we had visited on our 10th wedding anniversary, it was easy to say: "why not us?" So from that moment we researched, we visited, we planned and we made it here.

So here we are day four of our life changing adventure. No air conditioner, no dryer, and no Amazon prime. I hung washing on a line which is something I have not done since I was a teenager in South Africa.
